1. A point is missing
No grammar mistake costs as much as a forgotten Leitpunkt. Task fulfilment drops a level, and two missing points drop it two. Tick off the points as you write, and check at the end that each has its own paragraph, not just half a sentence.
2. The case after prepositions
The most common grammar mistake at B2. Every preposition demands a case, and with the two-way prepositions the question wo or wohin decides.
Ich bin mit der Kurs zufrieden. → Ich bin mit dem Kurs zufrieden.
Wir treffen uns in dem Café. (where) → Wir gehen in das Café. (where to)
wegen dem Wetter → wegen des Wetters
3. The verb in subordinate clauses
After weil, dass, obwohl, wenn, damit, the conjugated verb goes to the end. When speaking under pressure it often slips forward, and examiners notice at once.
…, weil ich habe keine Zeit. → …, weil ich keine Zeit habe.
Ich glaube, dass das ist eine gute Idee. → Ich glaube, dass das eine gute Idee ist.
4. Adjective endings and gender
The ending depends on the article, the gender and the case. A wrong gender drags the wrong ending with it. Always learn new nouns with their article.
auf der andere Seite → auf der anderen Seite
ein wichtige Grund → ein wichtiger Grund
das Kurs → der Kurs
5. Register: du instead of Sie
In the formal message (Schreiben Teil 2) and in the discussion, tone counts. A du in an email to the property manager, a Hallo instead of Sehr geehrte, a Tschüss at the end: each costs under register.
Hallo Frau Becker, kannst du mir sagen … → Sehr geehrte Frau Becker, könnten Sie mir sagen …
Tschüss, Anna → Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Anna Schmidt
6. Word choice and collocations
Not wrong, but not German: words that are fine on their own and don't go together. Good collocations are what separates B2 from B1.
eine Entscheidung machen → eine Entscheidung treffen
einen Fehler tun → einen Fehler machen
Ich habe eine Frage an Sie stellen. → Ich möchte Ihnen eine Frage stellen.
7. The same linking words every time
und, aber, dann, auch. Every sentence is understandable and the text still sits at C for coherence. You don't need many linking words, but different ones, and ones that express a relationship: deshalb, allerdings, außerdem, obwohl, einerseits … andererseits.
8. Too short
A text with fewer than half the required words scores 0. Just under the length costs too. Count your words while practising until you have a feel for 150.
